What is a Press-fit PCB?

A Press-fit PCB is a specialized form of PCB used in several applications.

Primarily, this PCB is one dedicated to high current applications.

It passes certain requirements due to its thermal performance.

But the use of this type of PCB is not for every type of project.

Aside from considerations regarding cost, there are other concerns.

Information about this type of PCB can be found on this page.

Press-fit PCB By Feature

Multilayer PCB

Complexity of interconnects is a Multilayer PCB’s main advantage. Some clients select 6 layer, 10 layer, etc. when using press-fit types.

Double-Sided PCB

While the majority of clients prefer single-sided for OEM, double-layer PCB is also inexpensive but versatile, making it useful.

Automotive PCB

Press-fit PCBs are used more often than others in the automotive industry. It works well in the car for IoT components like cameras.

High Current PCB

High Power PCB should not be confused with High Current PCB, but both take the multilayer board’s power current flow into account.

Impedance Control PCB

One of the benefits of the press-fit type is impedance control. It’s necessary for complex devices like those found with HDI.

ENIG PCB

Press-fit and ENIG PCB are used in tandem because their chemical properties match. Be sure to understand the specifics first.

What Makes Press-fit PCB So Special?

There are many ways to classify PCBs, some classify it by layers.

If you think of a Press-fit PCB in terms of solder, you can describe it as unique.

You see, most PCBs use soldering to construct circuit boards.

But Press-fit technology, when applied, does not use solder.

It’s solder-free. This results in reducing the risks associated with soldering.

As a result, a Press-fit PCB is lead-free.

It is also, unlike soldered boards, suitable for multiple reflow and assembly processes.

Advantages of Using the Press-fit Technology

What are the Advantages of Using the Press-fit Technology?

As previously stated, this type of PCB is solder-free.

Other advantages include:

  • It’s good for applications that demand the board to be exposed in high heat
  • It’s good for high current applications because of high ampacity (current-carrying ability)
  • It is stable because of its low Failure-in-Time value
  • Eco-friendly option because the boards can be re-used if pins are removed
  • The process of manufacturing it is straightforward, and can be fast-paced

What Materials are Used in the Press-fit PCB Process?

The basic materials that make-up a PCB is used in a Press-fit one.

That means, this type of PCB is not so different as it has the PCB Core, Substrates, Soldermask, etc.

But when compared to other PCBs, the Press-fit type is not subject to Through Hole Assembly.

Neither does it use Surface Mount Technology to mount PCB components.

Rather, it uses two types of pins:

Solid pin – which has a SOLID press-in zone

Compliant pin – which has an ELASTIC press-in zone

Press-fit PCB Fabrication

Applications of Press-fit PCB

The major application of this type of PCB is in the automotive industry.

That being said, there are other industries that make use of Press-fit boards. These are enumerated below:

  • Energy Sector – since this industry uses a lot of Power PCB/ Power Supply PCB
  • Medical Sector – which needs miniaturized parts
  • Aeronautics Sector – for the most sophisticated boards
  • Any HDI PCB or High Power PCB design
  • Navigation & Sensors, plus many others

Considerations When Using Press-fit PCB

Not all circuit boards can use the Press-fit technology.

Consider the following factors:

  • Are you using FR4 material? FR4 is acceptable, so is TG PCB and High TG PCB
  • What thickness of copper will be used? Standard of 1.6mm is acceptable
  • If Surface Finish is deliberated, we do recommend ENIG or Lead-free HASL
  • Press-fit parameters – the tolerance and minimum distance are ±0.05 for drilled PCB and ±0.075 for milled PCB
  • If SMD is used, there is a minimum distance of 2mm

  • “I have already shared my positive experience with PCBTok with others and would recommend them to them. There were no additional fees, and the cost was very affordable. They were very reasonable in this regard because they always provided me with a weekly report on time. They are very intelligent and diligent. They were ready to take on my PCB project. I would definitely use the crew again because they were excellent!”

Del Porter, Associate Product Marketing Manager from Canterbury, New Zealand
  • “They were excellent, guys. They promptly provided me with the PCB design I requested. They were well-organized, made deliberate movements, and avoided taking short cuts. On the third order I placed with them this year, I was once more pleased! Very pleasant and timely individuals who work quickly but thoroughly. They’re also so reasonably priced! When I need circuit boards in the future, I will always keep them in mind.”

Aldean Huebner, Senior IT Strategy Advisor from Antwerp, Belgium
  • “I have now collaborated with the PCBTok team on three circuit boards, and I have also recommended them to a number of friends. They always deliver their products on time and are incredibly helpful. They work quickly and consistently give me the impression that they are trying to outdo my expectations. There hasn’t been a fee increase either, which is such a welcome surprise.”
