Small PCB By Feature

Small Flex PCB

Customers need this for flexible industrial applications that frequently involve moving parts, such as some automotive parts and packaging machinery.

Small Rigid-Flex PCB

Rigid-Flex PCBs in smaller sizes are also used in industrial machinery tools. For instance, baggage equipment, palletizers, controllers, etc.

Small Rigid PCB

Small-sized boards can fit inside machines that require rigid type PCBs. As an example, there are paint equipment, automated assembly tools, etc.

Small medical PCB

Due to the rise of electronic health records for health monitoring with wearables, smaller versions of PCBs are becoming more common.

Small Automotive PCB

When ordering a small-sized automotive PCBs, you may refer to components for car gauges, motor switches, fuel sensors, fuses, etc.

Small Mobile PCB

Small mobile PCBs may be so compact that they can fit inside rings or other objects that use near-field communication.

What is a Small PCB?

Like no other PCB, on the Small PCB or mini PCB,

Small sized microchips chips or ICs are inserted.

The most obvious place to find this type of PCB is inside smartphones.

Small Audio PCBs, like those utilized in Bluetooth earbuds, are another example.

There are camera PCBs that fit into cameras’ small spaces

Additionally, there are Embedded PCBs, which are fundamentally compact

All these small PCBs save space, are high demand in the electronics market.

Why Use a Small PCB

Why Use a Small PCB?

Customers typically use small-sized circuit boards for two reasons: first, they need to keep up with technological advancements. And second, investing in the technology is economical.

Small PCBs cannot be ignored. They make up parts of bigger electronic tools.

When the small parts break down, they are easier to replace than the whole equipment.

The small circuit boards are cheaper to replace too, as these items are mass-produced.

Due to their widespread availability across all countries, ordering them is not a difficult process.

What are Materials Used for Small Printed Circuit Boards?

The typical raw materials used in large-sized PCB are also used in small PCB. There are several options available from the following list:

  • Regular FR4 – fiberglass epoxy, impregnated with resin
  • FR1, FR2, and FR3 – with has a paper component to it (not very long-lasting)
  • CEM-1 or CEM-3 – cheaper alternatives to FR4
  • Advanced materials like Rogers for HDI PCB
  • Ceramic and PTFE materials – Rogers product line also has this covered
  • Customized PCBs are always possible with whatever material you opt if you are using an experienced well-sourced PCB manufacturer.

Small PCB Fabrication

Small PCB Applications

The Small PCB is unquestionably one of the best-selling items in any PCB fabrication facility, which is not surprising given its wide range of beneficial uses, including the following:

  • Medical equipment – endoscopy tools (for the smallest incisions), non-clinical equipment like medical administration and test kits, and digital thermometers are examples of medical equipment that requires the small sizes of PCB.
  • Transportation – these are inside vehicles like cars and planes
  • Industrial equipment
  • Advanced IT Solutions – Small-sized boards are advantageous for advanced applications like robotic surgery, robotic hazardous material handling, assistive technology, and connected IoT devices.
  • Household or consumer items – these are typically mass-produced.
Designing Small PCBs

Finally, we discuss some tips on minimizing the space for circuit boards.

Take a look at the following:

  • Actual footprint versus default ones – check with your PCB manufacturer regarding the exact specs of vias, they might be smaller than you think
  • Familiarize yourself with advanced PCB materials’ data sheets
  • Arrange board layers – maximize the height restriction by using high-layer count PCBs
  • Use Flex PCB – Polyimide material is heat resistant and can eliminate need for repetitive PCB layers
  • Know the right PCB connectors to use – opt out of the bulkier ones, or adjust their placement

  • “I love this PCBTok. It was great that they were able to get us a good deal on the Small PCBs we needed. They seemed sincere in their desire to assist us in any way they could. I have and will keep recommending them to my business associates. They possess the energy to move quickly and are intelligent. I’m confident they are the PCB provider I’m looking for because they gave me a fair quotation.”

Heinz Sandlin, PCB Engineer from Aberdeenshire, Sctoland
  • “It’s difficult to find a reliable PCB supplier, but we’ve been extremely fortunate with PCBTok. They were recommended to me by a friend, and we requested quotes from them several times for different projects. Even though we decided not to proceed at the time, we had a good feeling about this business and knew they would be our choice when it came time to start prototyping. We were correct. I can’t imagine using someone else to carry out our orders.”

Markus Dulude, Senior Hardware Engineer from Sarthe, France
  • “A few months ago, I began a PCB project with another PCB supplier. It became clear about halfway through that the company I used lacked experience. The process became more obvious as it went along. My friends advised me to switch to PCBTok because they are the best and most affordable choice, so I did. They evaluated the damage and the necessary steps to finish the job. they then gave me a reasonable estimate. Now that the project is completely finished, I am happy.”

What is a Panelized Small PCB?

More likely, if you are ordering a small PCB, it is also a panelized PCB.

Panelization, V-Cutting, Tab-Routing and V-Scoring are similar terms.

These are methods used in the production of PCB where the boards are arranged together in a simple sheet.

They are separated with tabs that can be easily broken using a V-cutting or V-scoring PCB cutting machine.

Pooling together boards like this cuts costs big time.

Then, the individual small PCBs can be packaged for end-users’ convenience.

How Small is a Small PCB?

The smallest size of PCB can be 5mm by 3mm.

There are, of course exceptions where 4mm size can be achieved.

But this necessitates very special equipment and higher cost.

It is more probable to find possible to find 5mm sized ones to accommodate almost microscopic-sized ICs.

Most of these competent manufacturers are in Shenzhen, China.

In the manufacture of these boards, PCB stack-up, surface finish and via drilling must be in perfect accordance for the perfect fit.
