Characteristics of a Stretchable PCB
Generally, a Stretchable PCB is primarily composed of a Thermoplastic Polyurethane that provides enormous benefits to the product. Here are some of its properties:
- Transition Temperature – It has a typical value of greater than 200°
- Decomposition Temperature – It is approximately 250°
- Dielectric Constant (Dk) – Its expected value is about 4.4.
- Dielectric Strength – It has a value of 9 kV/100 um.
- Moisture Absorption – It has a typical rate of about 0.02%.
- Resistance – It is resistant to hydrolysis, wear effects, microbes, and weathering.
- Elasticity – It can vary depending on its vast operating temperature.
Factors that Affect the Performance of a Stretchable PCB
Various factors affect the elasticity of this board; hence, it is crucial to have knowledge of them. The following are the possible factors:
- Material – We highly suggest using Thermoplastic Polyurethane or Polyimide materials for this board since it has exceptional stretchable properties.
- Temperature Control – There’s a required temperature for this board to be bent and twisted. Also, too much heat can affect its flexural strength.
- Copper Trace – We suggest going for horseshoe-shaped traces for pliability.
- Dielectric Constant – It should have a low value to maintain its mechanical and thermal properties.
Perks of Stretchable PCB
The Stretchable PCB can offer a variety of benefits; here are some of them:
- Versatility – Similar to the flexible board, it allows the designer to attach this board to compact size devices and optimize its space.
- Thermal Control – The materials and components deployed are resistant to thermal stress; hence, they are ideal for various conditions.
- Dimensional Stability – It can be easily moved, bent, and twisted without experiencing any cracks and damaging the components.
- Assembly – It is simple to assemble and it is easy to maintain.
- Cost – Due to its reduced production process, its price is reduced too.

Stretchable PCB Fabrication
They do not differ much from flexible boards in terms of designing this board. But, we suggest following the standard guidelines in designing.
One of the most crucial to look at when you design your Stretchable PCB is its dimensional parameters, such as its thickness.
The standard thickness, as per the guidelines, is 100 um. Then, its solder mask should be applied partially and have a minimum spacing of ≥ 100 um.
In terms of copper thickness, it should be around 0.5 oz to 1 oz. Next, its aperture width should be 40 inches. Finally, its minimum radius should be 125 um.
If you have further clarifications about this, write us directly.
The Stretchable PCB is recognized to be highly functional and has numerous perks. However, in terms of usage, it has its limitations too.
The first drawback of this board is its tolerance to extreme external pressure. But, this only applies to some cases; this con will still vary.
Secondly, they do not apply to applications that require robustness and reliability since this kind of board can be very versatile and elastic.
However, its first drawback can be prevented if you choose the proper manufacturer with extensive knowledge in the industry to provide you with enough guidance.
We suggest messaging us for any questions and concerns you may have.
